An Honest Review: Starbucks' Iced Coconut Milk Mocha Macchiato
I'd like to start off this Honest Review by thanking Starbucks and its new menu items for allowing me to finally fulfill my Basic White Girl Destiny of incessantly photographing my drink and posting it online for the world to see.
The subject of today's pictures? The Iced Coconut Milk Mocha Macchiato.
The Iced Coconut Milk Mocha Macchiato hit the market on July 12 and is the first official Starbucks menu item made with coconut milk. As stated in Starbucks' press release, the "Iced Coconut Milk Mocha Macchiato features espresso shots poured over chilled coconut milk and combined with a hint of white chocolate mocha sauce." The limited-time espresso drink is available in all sizes and will cost you as little as $4.25, but that's only if you're willing to settle for a Tall. You can check out the beverage's Nutrition Facts for each respective size here.
Let's get one thing straight: It's apparent Starbucks now has coconut milk available and the chain is trying to milk it (Get it?!) as best it can by swapping out real milk with coconut milk in any ole' drink and advertising it as a new one. Think back to the wildly popular "Pink Drink" (aka a Strawberry Acai Refresher with coconut milk) that took social media by storm last month.
There are some definite upsides to Starbucks using coconut milk. It's lactose free. It's less caloric. It's chock full of healthy fat. It's vegan, which is vital to note because I'm sure a fast food website like #HackTheMenu has a huge vegan following. And in my humble opinion, it's darn tasty.
The Iced Coconut Milk Mocha Macchiato is a rich, creamy, only slightly coconut-y rendition of a standard Starbucks macchiato. On the menu, the word "coconut" should be bumped down a few font sizes and "mocha" should be bolded and underlined as the chocolate flavor far outweighed the coconut one. So, for those of you who don't love coconut, still give this drink a chance.
Oddly enough, my first couple gulps were overpowered by the thick caramel sauce pooling at the bottom of my cup, which took me by surprise considering there is no mention of caramel in the name of the drink whatsoever. Only on Starbucks' website did I see that caramel is a main component of the drink. That being said, the caramel sweetened up the drink nicely.
The biggest turn off was the film the drink left in my mouth. Whether this was from the fattiness of the coconut milk or the consistency of the syrups, I'm not totally sure. But either way, it had me licking my lips for the wrong reasons.
As with most things I've reviewed, you'll enjoy it if you have your expectations set accordingly. If you're craving some coconut, maybe look elsewhere. But if you're just looking for a tasty pick-me-up, this could be the sweet summer sip for you.
Would I recommend? Yeah? Nah? Yeah
