Ever since Starbucks first opened in 1971 with a single store in Seattle’s historic Pike Place Market they have been celebrating coffee and the whole coffee experience. From just a narrow storefront, Starbucks offered some of the world’s finest fresh-roasted whole bean coffees. The name, inspired by Moby Dick, evoked the romance of the high seas and the seafaring tradition of the early coffee traders. From the beginning, Starbucks set out to be a different kind of company. One that not only celebrated coffee and the rich tradition, but that also brought a feeling of connection. Their mission was and remains to inspire and nurture the human spirit – one person, one cup, and one neighborhood at a time. And the Starbucks menu quickly moved into just about every neighborhood! In 1983 Howard Schultz, Starbucks president & CEO, traveled to Italy and was captivated with Italian coffee bars and wanted to bring the experience to the U.S. He wanted a place for conversation and community – a place between work and home. He left Starbucks for a short period to start his own coffeehouses, but returned and purchased Starbucks in 1987. Today over 18,000 stores exist in at least 62 countries. Starbucks has become the premier roaster and retailer of specialty coffees in the world, with an elaborate menu that changed the way people talk about and order a cup of coffee. That’s the Starbucks regular menu… and then there’s the Starbucks secret menu
