What is the Medicine Ball (HCMT)?
The Starbucks "Medicine Ball," also known as the Honey Citrus Mint Tea, has garnered a reputation as a go-to remedy for those feeling under the weather. My experience ordering this secret menu item was one that left a lasting impression, not only for its soothing effects but also for the intriguing blend of flavors that delivered comfort in a cup.
I was on my way to work, bundled in layers but still feeling the sting of the cold. I wasn’t in the mood for my usual coffee—a robust, dark roast with just a splash of cream. Instead, I craved something soothing, something that would warm me from the inside out
I took my first sip as I walked out of the store, letting the warmth seep through the cup and into my chilled hands. The flavor was surprising, in a good way. The mint hit first, refreshing and cool, followed by the mellow sweetness of the peach. The lemonade added a tangy twist, cutting through the sweetness just enough to keep it balanced. The honey rounded it all out with a smooth, comforting finish.
It wasn’t overly sweet, which I appreciated. The interaction between the mint and citrus was refreshing yet soothing, like a warm blanket on a cold day. It was exactly what I needed.
Does the Medicine Ball (HCMT) secret menu hack have any alternate names?
This Starbucks drink may have humble beginnings as the off-menu “Medicine Ball”, and while it’s not a cure-all, the ingredients do have a reputation for being soothing when you’re feeling under the weather. That's why it has sometimes also been called the Cold Buster.
With that said, the official name of the Starbucks Medicine Ball secret menu hack is the Honey Citrus Mint Tea (or HCMT). That's right, this drink has become so popular that it’s now officially on the menu, but not always written down on the physical menu.
The Jade Citrus Mint tea is loaded with antioxidants from the green tea, which can be great for boosting your immune system. The Peach Tranquility tea is caffeine-free, making it a calming choice, and the combination of citrus and mint can help ease a sore throat or stuffy nose. The honey adds a natural sweetness while also being known for its soothing properties.
For those who are feeling sick or just in need of a little comfort, the Medicine Ball is like a warm hug in a cup.
While the drink isn't often displayed on the menu up on the wall behind the counter, the fact that it's on the menu now means that baristas are trained and it's now one of the easiest secret menu items to order at Starbucks. I think we can all be a little grateful for that.
So, what's the secret?
The Medicine Ball is made up of a blend of two teas: Jade Citrus Mint Green Tea and Peach Tranquility Herbal Tea, both from Teavana. The Jade Citrus Mint is a green tea with refreshing spearmint, lemongrass, and lemon verbena, while the Peach Tranquility is an herbal tea featuring a blend of peach, chamomile, and citrus flavors. Together, they create a harmonious balance that’s both invigorating and calming.
These teas are brewed together and then combined with hot water and steamed lemonade. To finish it off, a drizzle of honey is added for sweetness.
The combination seemed unusual at first—a mix of mint, citrus, and peach sounded like a flavor overload—but it all came together so well. None of the ingredients overpowered each other, it all melded perfectly in the classic Starbucks cup. And even better, breathing in the steam swirling off the Medicine Ball helped clear my sinuses!

When I orderd this drink in August of 2024, I found that the Medicine Ball cost $5.25. This seemed reasonable given the multiple ingredients and difficulty to prepare this complex tea. Most of their other teas were similary priced for the same size and probably take less time to prepare.
I later learned that you can customize the HCMT to suit your preferences. Some people ask for a pump of peppermint syrup for more minty freshness, while others might opt for a bit more honey if they like it sweeter. You can even ask for it with less lemonade if you prefer a less tangy flavor.
